Any early-stage venture can apply to the MaRS Catalyst Fund. However, selection for investment is highly competitive and only a limited number of applicants receive funding. Successful companies are subject to rigorous due diligence and a prescribed approval process.

Eligible companies must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a thoughtful plan to create significant and measurable direct environmental or social impact from a product or service
  • Be a for-profit, Canadian company and have a strong financial return opportunity
  • Have a defined core technology that can scale and create measurable change
  • Target a sizeable, addressable market
  • Have a talented and diverse team
  • Have initial verified customer traction — ideally demonstrated through revenues

  • Resource efficiency
  • Grid efficiency


  • Health outcomes
  • Resource efficiency
  • Access to care
  • Care efficiency


  • Reduced dropout rates
  • Access to affordable, high-quality education
  • Skills improvement to match the changing workplace
  • Increased achievement of students
